Tools of Your Trade - #13 Eric Seymour

1. Name and profession
Eric Seymour, Art Director

2. Where do you work?
Sajak & Farki, in Calgary, AB.

3. What inspired you to start?
My dad worked at IBM for like 30 years, and I remember him bringing home computer boxes and seeing that old Paul Rand IBM logo with the Eye, and the Bee, and the M. I loved it. I remember thinking, 'computers are so boring, but their logo is so weird!' Then 20 years later, I was going to college to be a geologist or something, and somebody put up their hand at the end of my presentation on Buttes (not butts) and said, "Your presentation looked reaaalllllyy good." That's when I started to think maybe I was doing the wrong thing.

4. What's inspiring these days?
I get really excited to make things when people around me are doing cool things. I like to surround myself with people who are better than me, cause then I push myself harder to be on their level. The internet is really cool too.

6. What did you sketch in your Web Book this week?
The sketches shown in my tools photo is actually sketches of the new Gridbooks, in an old Gridbook, when we designed them a year or so ago. The last thing I drew in my Gridbook was a quick mock-up of a site wireframe for our Intern, with a highlighter cause I couldn't find another pen.

Check out Eric's 'Coming Soon' page at http://ericseymour.com/ then check back in a while to see if he's got an actual website up. In the meantime, check Eric's Instagram at http://instagram.com/ericdseymour

Tools of Your Trade - #05 Aaron Thompson

1. Name and profession
Aaron Thompson / Senior Experience Architect

2. Where do you work?
Critical Mass

3. What inspired you to start?
I first got into design because of gig posters and album art. I liked how these visuals turned music from an auditory experience to a multi-sensory one. I slowly moved away from visual design and into user experience design due to my hyper logical brain meats. And my inability to draw. And my crippling fear of colour.

4. What's inspiring these days?
I am inspired by outer space, order and purpose, simplicity and dad jokes.

5. 10 words about what's in the photo.
Forehand Smash
Bourbon

Classic

6. What did you sketch in your Web Book this week?
Sketching comes hard to me. I am a late bloomer to acknowledging its tremendous benefits in any sort of problem solving or creative endeavour. My sketches are wildly crude. Luckily however, since any piece of a UI can be drawn by knowing how to draw a triangle, a circle and a square, it doesn't matter too much.

I work from home and coffee shops.

3. What inspired you to start?
I've always been drawn to writing and one day, long after I finished my art degree, I realized it was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. The internet and social media have created so many opportunities and friends for me that I never thought possible. Sometimes I have to pinch myself.

4. What's inspiring these days?
At the moment, I am absolutely inspired by everything monochromatic, craft cocktails and summer road trips. I've been shooting a lot and writing a lot - both are keeping me moving in new directions. I seem to think only in filmic sequences at the moment which works perfect because I am off to write a screenplay at the end of the month.
